New technology to get you fit
The Wii Fit is just one of a wide range of gizmos that promise to keep us trim and healthy. But do they live up to the hype? We put five to the test with fitness instructor Kristoph Thompson.
Power PlateWhat is it? The Power Plate is a vibrating plate that you can stand, sit or lie on while doing resistance exercises such as squats and lunges.

The theory is, the greater the amount of muscular contractions, the better the results.
What does it work?You can perform most muscle toning exercises on the Power Plate, so you can target any area you wish. You do each exercise for either 30, 45 or 60 seconds.
To get the most from this machine, include exercises that involve more than one muscle group, eg push ups instead of front raises with weights.
How often? It depends on the resistance exercises you choose, but using the plate for 10 to 20 minutes three times a week should be enough to target the major trouble spots.
Does it work? Vibration technology is popular in physiotherapy because it’s been shown to speed recovery from injury, so it could help those recovering from sports injuries.
Many studies also show strength gains in elderly inactive populations.
There is limited research showing any weight loss benefits, but one study shows a visible reduction in cellulite after a few weeks’ use.
The emphasis on toning muscle means it’s no substitute for cardiovascular exercise like jogging and its high price tag means it’s certainly not for everyone. You can use it to assess how hard you are working and compare different types of exercise.
The watch also connects to your PC, allowing you to chart and track your training and performance.
What does it work? Suunto can be used with any mode of exercise, allowing you to compare your effort and training intensity from one cheap jerseys activity to the next.
How often? Since the main benefits are from using the Suunto when cardio training, you’ll need to do three or more 30 minute sessions a week.
Does it work? The Suunto accurately monitors your heart rate as you exercise so you work at the right intensity. This can result in significant training gains.
Using the software to analyse your workouts will also give you a more scientific and quantifiable means of charting your progress perfect if you’ve got a clear goal in mind.
It combines walking, stepping and cross training to increase fitness and help you to manage your weight.
What does it work?The Tread Climber gives a cardiovascular workout that tones the lower half of the body, including the thigh muscles and bottom.
How often? Cardio activity is best performed three or more times a week for at least 30 minutes a time.
Does it work? Research has shown that the Tread Climber burns up to twice as many calories as the equivalent speed on a flat treadmill.
However, the research doesn’t show the difference between the Tread Climber and uphill walking.
In the gym, the Tread Climber is very good for beginners since you would burn more calories than walking on a treadmill or using a cross trainer at comparable speeds.
